Sonic Lunch Welcomes Darren Criss and Theo Katzman on 6/13

by Bank of Ann Arbor June 11, 2013 7:00

Yes, he can act.  And sing, dance, play guitar, play piano & write infectious tunes.  We're talking about University of Michigan grad Darren Criss, Blaine Anderson on the smash-hit TV series Glee, playing at the Michigan Theater this Thursday as part of Bank of Ann Arbor's Sonic Lunch concert series.

A native of San Francisco, Criss took an interest in music and performing arts at an early age, writing his first song when he was fifteen and later graduating from UM with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2009.  While he was studying in Ann Arbor, Criss founded StarKid Productions, a theater company best known for A Very Potter Musical, a Harry Potter parody.  And speaking of theater, he made his Broadway debut early last year when he took over Daniel Radcliffe's role in the revival of How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.

Darren is currently on his first-ever concert tour and will be releasing his debut album for Columbia Records in 2014.  Expect to hear new songs, tunes from Glee, StarKid and his earlier Human EP when he takes the stage shortly after noon this Thursday.  In Darren's band and serving as the opening act at the Michigan Theater will be none other than Theo Katzman, the gifted singer-songwriter who was a key member in Ann Arbor's late, great My Dear Disco/Ella Riot.

Join us on Thursday for our Sonic Lunch 2013 opener, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas!

by Bank of Ann Arbor June 3, 2013 11:16

Martha Reeves got her start in showbiz at an early age.  With a voice that bore the righteous fervor of gospel and the flinty edginess of rhythm & blues, she was bringing down the house at clubs around Detroit when she was discovered by Motown’s Repertoire Director Mickey Stevenson.  Reeves had just won a talent competition at Detroit’s fabled Twenty Grand Club, after which Stevenson invited her to audition for his label.  The audition never happened, but within a year, Reeves (then Martha Lavaille) was working in the company’s A&R department .  Thanks to a recording session where the scheduled artist Mary Wells failed to show up, Martha got her shot to step in and record.

Martha’s backing group, originally known as the Del Phi’s, adopted the moniker The Vandellas  after combining Detroit’s Van Dyke Street with the first name of a favorite singer, Della Reese. Within the year, they were a national sensation, defining the landscape of Motown and securing their place in music history.

During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and roll and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones.  The group’s string of hits include “Heat Wave,” “Quicksand,” “In My Lonely Room,” “Nowhere to Run,” “My Baby Loves Me,”, “Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things,” “I’m Ready For Love,” “Jimmy Mack,” and, of course, the Motown anthem, “Dancing In The Street.”   They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and have been named #96 in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Don’t miss your chance to see one of Detroit’s original legends of Motown as they rock the streets of Ann Arbor.  http://soniclunch.com/sonic-artists/martha-reeves/

Caution Urged on Photo-Sharing Sites

by Bank of Ann Arbor May 31, 2013 12:46

The FBI has seen an increase in cyber criminals who use online photo-sharing programs to perpetrate scams and harm victims’ computers. These criminals advertise vehicles online but will not provide pictures in the advertisement. They will send photos on request. Sometimes the photo is a single file sent as an e-mail attachment, and sometimes the victim receives a link to an online photo gallery.

The photos can/often contain malicious software that infects the victims” computer, directing them to fake websites that look nearly identical to the real site where they originally saw the advertisement. The cyber criminals run all aspects of these fake websites, including “tech support” or “live chat support,” and any “recommended” escrow services. After the victim agrees to purchase the item and makes the payment, the criminals stop responding to correspondence. The victims never receive any merchandise.

The FBI urges consumers to protect themselves when shopping online. Here are a few tips for staying safe:

  • Be cautious if you are on an auction site and lose an auction and the seller contacts you later saying the original bidder fell through.
  • Make sure websites are secure and authenticated before you purchase an item online. Use only well-known escrow services.
  • Research to determine if a car dealership is real and how long it has been in business.
  • Be wary if the price for the item you’d like to buy is severely undervalued; if it is, the item is likely fraudulent.
  • Scan files before downloading them to your computer.
  • Keep your computer software, including the operating system, updated with the latest patches.
  • Ensure your anti-virus software and firewalls are current – they can help prevent malware infections.

Phishing Attacks On Telecommunication Customers

by Bank of Ann Arbor May 8, 2013 2:58

Phishing Attacks On Telecommunication Customers Resulting In Account Takeovers

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received numerous reports of phishing attacks targeting various telecommunication companies' customers. Individuals receive automated telephone calls that claim to be from the victim's telecommunication carrier. Victims are directed to a phishing site to receive a credit, discount, or prize ranging from $300 to $500.

The phishing site is a replica of one of the telecommunication carrier's sites and requests the victims' log-in credentials and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. Once victims enter their information, they are redirected to the telecommunication carrier’s actual website. The subject then makes changes to the customer's account.

The IC3 urges the public to be cautious of unsolicited telephone calls, e-mails and text messages, especially those promising some type of compensation for supplying account information. If you receive such an offer, verify it with the business associated with your account before supplying any information. Use the information supplied on your account statement to contact the business.
